Ingeborg Bachmann

The Austrian-born author of philosophical lectures, novels, plays, poetry, short stories, and literary correspondences, Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) exacted a seismic influence on German-language letters and world literature at-large. From her spellbound collections of poetry, Die gestundete Zeit (1953) and Anrufung des großen bären (1956), to her grand guignol novel of personae, Malina (1971), Bachmann broke paths in her work unlike any other artist of her time, and received such laurels as the Georg Büchner Prize and the Bremen Award. She died in Rome, 17 October 1973.
